Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent

When I first heard about making your own laundry detergent (actually, was way before my Pinterest years. I found it on the Duggar's website), I thought "Man, that's a lot of work and looks expensive!" But hearing about how well it actually works, I decided to try it. A couple of my friends made the liquid version, but I prefer powdered detergent. To the store I went, a gathered the following supplies (I got the pictures off of each company's website, so you will know exactly what it looks like). I was able to find all of it at Meijer, in the laundry and soap aisle. Up front it was a bit pricey (About $12), but it makes SOOO much and lasts a long time! I only make a little at a time and still have a ton of each supply left.

To make the soap:
Grate 2 Fels-Naptha bars. This is the hardest part! I also like to run it through the Magic Bullet blender after I grate it, so it is a finer texture.
Add in 2 cups Borax, 2 cups Washing Soda, and 1/2 cup Baking Soda. Mix well and store in an airtight container.

To use: Some sites say 1 tbsp is enough, others say 2. With 4 boys in my house, I use 2 :)
It doesn't sud up like normal soap, but it cleans REALLY good! Better than my old store bought soap! Because it doesn't suds up, it's fine for HE (I have one). It's gentle on Caleb's skin and smells awesome!

  1. I'm so glad you posted about the HE for using powder! I make liquid, but I've always thought the powder would be easier, but never knew it it would work in an HE!
